Fazal Meets up with Shotgun Jimmie and Ian from Attack in Black to chat about Shot Gun Jimmie's latest release, Still Jimmie.
Mixing a charmingly lo-fi approach with a knack for quirky, hook ridden songwriting, The Onlys (Delorean Recordings, 2009), was Shotgun Jimmie's first solo outing after the demise of his band, Shotgun & Jaybird. The album quickly found an audience, as it spent several weeks in the top ten of the National Earshot campus radio charts and saw the single "Bedhead" championed by CBC Radio 3. Exclaim! said of the disc, "The Onlys is lo-fi gold, mixing smart stream-of-conscious lyricism with flashes of broke down musical skill." Not only embraced by the media though, The Onlys also found its way into the hands of Welland, Ontario's, Attack in Black.
Instantly won over by the album, the band invited Jimmie on their upcoming National tour. Leading up to the dates, the two acts regularly performed together with Attack in Black acting as Jimmie's backing band. Their musical bond was immediate. Jimmie's songs took on new dimensions with the four piece's instrumental prowess and well honed sensibilities. Following the completion of the tour, the acts decided to document the chemistry they had developed, and set out to record in Attack in Black's home studio.
The resulting, Still Jimmie, shifts from Shotgun Jimmie's playful approach on The Onlys to a darker and more direct, rock record. "Mind Crumb" starts with urgent guitars and crashing drums, only to drift into a winding Neil Young-esque haze of guitar squalls. "Used Parts" is ramshackle pop craftsmanship at its best, as hooks come and go seemingly without effort. The rest of Still Jimmie manages to balance songs as opposed as "Louis Depson" and"Dawson City" without ever straying from a core sound.
