A look into one of the most talked-about classes at the University of Calgary - GNST 300
In this atypical edition of Full Frontal, we present NUTV reporter and GNST 300 student Rueben Tshetter's critical analysis of professor Ron Glasberg's teaching methods for the course.
GNST 300 is a University of Calgary course which was mandatory for all students majoring in a program within the Communication and Culture faculty (as of April 2010, the faculty was amalgamated along with Fine Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities into a "mega-faculty" at the U of C). The class serves basically as an exploration of the ideas which are seen to be the pillars of Western Civilization. The course material navigates these ideas by analyzing texts from eras from the ancient to Greco-Roman periods, on to the French Revolution. The works of writers and thinkers such as Aristotle, Marcus Aurelius, Thomas Aquinas, John Calvin, Francis Bacon, Mary Wollstonecraft and a litany of others is covered.
This NUTV exploration of GNST 300 began with Tschetter's desire to lay bare certain aspects of the course, one of them being the commonly-held notion that Glasberg's teaching methods encourage the understanding, and even the critique of many of our institutions, such as the university.
With the Producer's help, Tschetter realized quickly that not only would this story be too expansive for a 2-3 minute timeslot typically assigned to segments on the Full Frontal show, but that even in three 2.5-minute parts, the story would be left incomplete. Presented here is a more complete version of the series than what was presented over the past few episodes of Full Frontal:
Part 1 - A brief interview with Ron Glasberg
Part 2 - A look inside Glasberg's GNST 300 classroom
Part 3 - A fuller version of the discussion on GNST 300 featuring Rusben Tschetter and some of his classmates. Producer Justin Hardjowirogo served as "moderator", or more specifically, a "provocateur" for discussion, as he took both GNST 300 and 500 with Ron Glasberg as an undergraduate some years ago.
This special edition of Full Frontal NUTV is not presented as a journalistic work, but, rather, one student's struggle to navigate his own educational experiences. The segment breaks down as follows:
- Overall introduction and explanation
- Part 1 - Summary and explanation of Part 1
- Part 2 - Summary and explanation of Part 2
- Lead-in for Part 3: Panel Discussion
- Part 3: Panel Discussion
- Debrief and conclusions
